How It Began

The story of Mwakalundi Baptist Church begins with open-air evangelism. Pastor Abogasti led a Pentecost outreach campaign in the community, and what was planned as an evangelistic event quickly became the beginning of a new local church. As men and women placed their faith in Christ, the ministry moved beyond a single moment and into the formation of an organized body of believers.

This is what Missionpoint church planting looks like at its earliest stage: not buildings, not budgets, not programs — but a pastor, a Gospel message, and people responding.

Eighty Baptisms, One Community

The most striking moment in the founding of Mwakalundi was the baptism of 80 new believers in a local river. In one event, an entire founding membership was formed — visibly, publicly, and on record.

Those 80 baptized believers became the founding membership of Mwakalundi Baptist Church. From that moment, the church had a clear starting point that could be remembered, documented, and built on.

The First Worship Service — Under a Tree

When the new congregation gathered for their first Sunday worship service, there was no building. There was a tree.

That detail matters. It captures something true about how every Missionpoint begins: in faith, under whatever shelter is available, with believers gathering before structures exist. The image of 80 people worshipping under a tree in Tanzania is the same image that has marked the first day of churches all over the world — and now, it marks the beginning of Mwakalundi.

A Pastor on the Way

Pastor Abogasti planted Mwakalundi Baptist Church through the Pentecost outreach, but the long-term shepherding will pass to a new hand. A Bible student in pastoral training will graduate shortly and take up the role of Mwakalundi’s first dedicated pastor.

This is the Missionpoint model in motion — leaders raised up from within the community, equipped through training, and placed back into the field they’ll serve for life.

Mwakalundi Baptist Church now joins the Missionpoint Church Network of Amigos Internacionales — a growing network of church plants across Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, and the newest field in Burundi.

Each Missionpoint begins where the need is greatest. In Ogul, Uganda — the flagship Missionpoint — the model includes a church, a school, a water well, life skills training, leadership development, and a planned medical clinic. In Gisuru, Burundi, the same model begins with medical camps. In Mwakalundi, it begins with a Pentecost outreach and 80 baptisms.

A Church Began Through Outreach

Mwakalundi Baptist Church was not planted the way most churches are. There was no building prepared, no charter membership form, and no formal launch date circled on a calendar. It began with an outreach event — a Pentecost gathering in a Tanzanian community where people came to hear the gospel proclaimed in the open air.

Amigos Internacionales had been working alongside local ministry partners in Tanzania, building relationships with village leaders and community members long before that day arrived. The Missionpoint model depends on that kind of groundwork: patient presence, trusted relationships, and readiness for whatever God initiates. At the Pentecost outreach, something was initiated that no one had fully planned for.

Chapter Two · The Baptism

The response to the outreach was overwhelming. Eighty people made professions of faith and were baptized. That number — 80 — carries weight beyond a statistic. Those eighty baptisms did not mark the end of the outreach event. They marked the beginning of a church. Every person who came up out of the water became a founding member of Mwakalundi Baptist Church. The congregation was not gathered gradually over months of Sunday services. It was born in a single day, sealed in water, and sent immediately into the work of building something permanent.

Mwakalundi Baptist Church is now moving through the seven stages of the Missionpoint model. Pastor Abogasti leads the congregation as they pursue what every new church in the network needs: infrastructure, clean water, education, and long-term pastoral development.
