In a village in Northern Uganda, a grandmother has not been able to see clearly for years. She squints at her grandchildren, unable to make out their faces. She has never had access to an eye doctor — the nearest clinic is too far, too expensive, too out of reach.
Then an Amigos Internacionales eye camp arrives. Within hours, she is fitted with glasses. She looks at her granddaughter for the first time in years and breaks into tears.
This is medical missions. This is what holistic care looks like in rural Africa.
3-Day Medical Camps in Rural Uganda
Amigos Internacionales organizes multi-day medical camps that bring doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers directly into the villages that need them most. In 3 days, hundreds of patients are seen, treated, and cared for — many for conditions they have suffered with for years without relief.
These camps address common but often untreated conditions: malaria, infections, malnutrition, eye disease, dental decay, hypertension, and more. For communities with no regular healthcare access, these camps are genuinely life-saving.
Eye Camps: Restoring Sight, Restoring Dignity
Vision loss is one of the most preventable and treatable causes of disability in sub-Saharan Africa — yet millions suffer needlessly because eye care is inaccessible. Our eye camps bring qualified ophthalmologists and optometrists into rural Uganda to provide screenings, eyeglasses, and treatment for conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and infections.
The results are immediate and dramatic. A child who could not read the chalkboard suddenly can. A farmer who could not tend his crops regains the sight to provide for his family. A grandmother sees her grandchildren's faces again.
Bethel Smile: Bringing Dental Care to the Unreached
Our Bethel Smile dental program brings oral healthcare — a luxury in most of rural Uganda — directly to communities. Dental pain and infection affect nutrition, school attendance, work productivity, and overall wellbeing. Bethel Smile addresses these needs with compassion and skill, treating patients who have often never seen a dentist in their lives.
Life Skills Training: Empowering Women to Lead
Healthcare alone is not enough. True transformation requires equipping people — especially women — with practical skills to create sustainable livelihoods.
Amigos Internacionales Life Skills Training classes teach women and youth financial literacy, entrepreneurship, sewing and tailoring, hygiene education, and agricultural skills. In communities where women have historically been marginalized, these programs create economic independence, self-confidence, and community leadership.
In one of our most powerful programs, women learn to create reusable sanitary products — a skill that addresses both a practical need and a dignity issue that keeps girls out of school each month.
Trauma Ministry: Healing the Invisible Wounds
Many communities in Northern Uganda carry the invisible wounds of war, displacement, loss, and violence. South Sudanese refugees have survived horrors that are beyond description. The children in our schools have seen things no child should ever see.
Amigos Internacionales' HeartMend Trauma Ministry provides healing for these deep wounds through trained facilitators, community-based trauma recovery programs, and the power of the Gospel to bring genuine restoration. Healing the body and healing the soul are inseparable — and our trauma ministry bridges both.
The Holistic Vision of Amigos Internacionales
Everything we do — clean water, schools, child sponsorship, medical camps, life skills, church planting — is part of a single, integrated vision: sustainable communities where people are healthy, educated, fed, loved, and free.
This is not charity. It is accompaniment. We walk with communities over time, returning season after season, building trust that cannot be manufactured and transformation that cannot be rushed.
