Protecting Malawi’s Children: Our Commitment
Every child deserves more than survival. Every child deserves safety, love, dignity, and the freedom to dream. In Malawi, however—particularly in rural districts like Mulanje—too many children grow up facing risks that no child should ever endure.
In 2025 alone, 148,664 cases of child abuse, exploitation, and neglect were reported nationwide. Behind each statistic is a real child—someone’s daughter, son, or sibling—whose childhood was interrupted by violence, forced responsibility, or silence. Harmful practices such as child marriage, child labour, and sexual violence continue to threaten children’s wellbeing, education, and future potential.
These realities are painful—but they are not the end of the story.
Why Child Protection Matters in Malawi
Child protection is not just about responding to abuse after it happens. It is about preventing harm, strengthening families, and building communities where children are valued, listened to, and protected.
In Malawi, poverty, social norms, limited access to education, and weak reporting mechanisms often place children at risk. Girls are especially vulnerable to early marriage. Boys are frequently pushed into hazardous labour. Many children suffer in silence because they fear stigma or retaliation.
Protecting children means addressing these root causes while creating safe systems that respond quickly and compassionately when abuse occurs.
Our Approach: Community-Led, Child-Centered, and Sustainable
At Amigos Internacionales–Malawi, we believe lasting child protection begins within the community. Our work is grounded in partnership with families, traditional leaders, faith institutions, schools, and local authorities. Rather than imposing solutions, we walk alongside communities—listening, learning, and building local ownership.
Our child protection work focuses on three core pillars:
1. Prevention through Awareness and Education
We equip children, parents, and caregivers with knowledge about child rights, positive parenting, and safe reporting pathways. When communities understand what protection looks like, silence gives way to action.
2. Strengthening Child Protection Systems
We collaborate with local structures to improve case identification, referral, and follow-up—ensuring vulnerable children are not only rescued but supported over time.
3. Advocacy Against Harmful Practices
Through dialogue and advocacy, we challenge norms that perpetuate child marriage, exploitation, and abuse, while promoting alternatives rooted in dignity, education, and opportunity.

Impact in 2025: Turning Commitment into Action
Despite limited resources and complex challenges, 2025 marked meaningful progress in Mulanje District:
- 2,000 children were reached with child rights education, empowering them to speak up and seek help
- 1,452 children were withdrawn from early marriages and supported to re-enter safer environments
- 3,000 community members engaged in child protection initiatives, strengthening collective responsibility for children’s wellbeing
Each of these numbers represents lives redirected—children returning to school, families choosing protection over pressure, and communities beginning to say, “Enough.”

Stories Beyond the Numbers
What inspires us most are the quiet transformations: a mother who now understands the law and chooses to protect her daughter; a village leader who intervenes to stop an early marriage; a child who learns that abuse is not normal—and that help is available.
Change happens when people are given knowledge, support, and the courage to act together.
The Work Ahead: Why Your Support Matters
While progress is real, the need remains urgent. Thousands of children are still at risk, and prevention requires sustained commitment. Expanding outreach, strengthening reporting mechanisms, supporting survivors, and equipping communities all demand continued investment.
When you support child protection work in Malawi, you are not just funding a program—you are protecting childhood itself.
