Dirty rivers and ponds are often all people have, bringing diseases and a whole lot of struggle. But we at Amigos Internacionales are doing something about it. The Water Struggle in Northern Uganda
Northern Uganda’s got a real water problem. Lots of communities don’t have clean water, so folks scoop it from muddy rivers or sketchy ponds. That stuff’s full of germs, and it’s making people sick with things like cholera, especially the kids. It’s rough in daily life too. Women and girls spend hours hauling water, which means no school or work for them. We see this “hardship” and know diseases from dirty water are a big reason we’re stepping in. It’s not just inconvenient, it’s a health crisis that hits families hard every day.

Amigos’ Deep Well Solution
So how are we tackling this? We’re drilling deep water wells to pull up clean, safe water. These wells go way down to underground sources, skipping all the nasty stuff on the surface. We’ve been bringing wells to villages across Northern Uganda. The best part? Our wells are built to last, what we call a “sustainable source.” No more trekking for dirty water, just a reliable spot to fill up nearby.
Real Impact on Lives
What’s all this clean water doing? For starters, it’s cutting down diseases big time. With safe water from our wells, families aren’t getting sick as much, which is huge for kids who used to miss out. In the hills of Buhweju District in southwestern Uganda, the world had grown dim for 39-year-old John Paul Taremwa. Blinded in one eye by disease, and slowly losing vision in the other due to a cataract, John Paul lived on the edge of complete darkness. Each day became more difficult—navigating uneven paths, depending on others, feeling the slow erosion of dignity that comes when something as basic and vital as sight begins to slip away. At Amigos Internacionales, we believe that no one should have to live that way. Ours mission has never been about numbers or events—it’s about people like John Paul. We exist to restore hope through healing, to meet both physical and spiritual needs in places the world often forgets.
In a remote village in southwestern Uganda, a woman named Joy once faced the devastating possibility of permanent blindness. Last year, driven by deteriorating vision and rising desperation, she traveled many kilometers on foot to reach a government hospital in hopes of receiving cataract surgery. But the cost— 3,000,000 Ugandan shillings (approximately $800 USD )—was impossibly high. She returned home defeated. “I decided to forget about my left eye,” Joy shared. “And I prayed my right eye wouldn’t die.”

Limited access to medical services has left many vulnerable to preventable diseases and untreated conditions.
