Imagine starting your day by walking 90 minutes — each way — to collect water from a muddy, disease-infected source. Then imagine giving that water to your children because it is the only option.
This is daily life for thousands of families in Northern Uganda. And it is a crisis that Amigos Internacionales is working to end — one water well at a time.
The Water Crisis in Northern Uganda
Waterborne diseases — cholera, typhoid, dysentery — are among the leading killers of children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. In Northern Uganda, particularly in communities around Gulu, Pawik, and the refugee settlements hosting South Sudanese families, access to clean, safe water remains dangerously limited.
When children drink contaminated water, they miss school. They get sick. They fall behind. The cycle of poverty tightens. But when a community gets a clean water well, everything changes — and the data proves it.
What Happens When a Village Gets Clean Water
Communities with access to clean water wells experience dramatic drops in child illness and mortality. Girls who previously spent hours collecting water can attend school full time. Women gain hours each day to pursue income-generating activities. Crop yields improve when irrigation is possible. Churches and community centers flourish because people have energy and time.
We have seen this transformation firsthand in Gulu, Uganda, where our Water for Gulu project has brought safe water to schools and villages that had none. The moment a pump is installed and children gather around it laughing, drinking, splashing clean water on their faces — that moment is sacred.
The MissionPoint Approach to Water
At Amigos Internacionales, water is never just water. Every well we drill is part of a holistic community development model. In Ogul Village, for example, the water well sits alongside a church, a school, a life skills training center, and farmland — because no single intervention alone creates lasting change.
We also believe in a verse that has guided our work from the beginning: 'I come to give you living water' (John 4:14). Clean water sustains the body. The Gospel sustains the soul. We pursue both.
How You Can Help Drill a Water Well in Uganda
Drilling a water well in Northern Uganda is a life-saving investment. Your gift to Amigos Internacionales goes directly toward drilling costs, pump installation, and community training to maintain the well for decades. Every donor who contributes to a water project receives updates on the specific well their gift helped build.
No gift is too small. When combined with the generosity of others, your contribution is part of something that will outlive all of us.
Clean Water Is Not a Luxury — It Is a Right
We believe every child — in Uganda or anywhere else — deserves access to clean, safe water. We are working to make that belief a reality in Northern Uganda, and your partnership makes it possible.
