Several years ago, Amigos Internacionales began the journey in Uganda to help fight literacy among the most poorest of children in Gulu, Uganda. Due to wars and HIV, many households have become vulnerable due to a situation called “Orphan Led” Households. These are family units with no one in the household to lead and guide the other children, except the oldest child, many times too young to be taking on these responsibilities. Through our Ugandan Director of Operations, Patrick Kibwota (or in Africa it’s Kibwota Patrick as the surname is first) we have located and begun a trial of 13 children without parental leadership in the homes that would no be in school except for the efforts of our donors/sponsors.
There are many stories to tell, but one little preschool girl was unable to attend school and was being left behind. Due to the fact that no adults where in the home, the children could not afford to stay in school. Patrick discovered this little girl and immediately placed her in class.
We visited her with her head schoolmaster and found that in one month she had place #1 in her class. Potential that previously was going untapped now realizing her dream of getting an education and an avenue for a better life…
