Burundi—ranked 187th out of 193 on the Human Development Index—faces a profound health crisis. According to The Borgen Project, life expectancy remains low at just 62.3 years, worsened by widespread malnutrition, preventable disease, and limited access to quality healthcare (Borgen Project, 2020).
Nearly 800 women die daily from pregnancy-related causes, and diseases like malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea devastate families across this small East African nation. With only 13% of the population living in urban centers, rural communities suffer disproportionately from weak health infrastructure.
🚑 Why the Urgency?
- Staggering maternal-child health risks
Burundi’s maternal mortality rate is among the world’s highest—392 deaths per 100,000 live births. The Borgen Project also highlights how malnutrition contributes to 45% of deaths in children under five, a tragic but preventable outcome. - Widespread disease and fragile systems
Health infrastructure is limited; as of 2023, there’s only 1 physician per 30,000 people. Kirundo Hospital, for instance, has just two doctors serving thousands in a malaria-endemic zone. - Gender inequality amplifies vulnerability
Burundi’s Gender Inequality Index sits at ~0.520, and The Borgen Project reports that limited reproductive health services are a direct barrier to women's well-being and longevity.
