When we first met John Paul, his world was cloaked in darkness—literally and spiritually. Once a reader and active member of his community, John Paul had lost his vision due to a severe form of cataract that left him completely blind. He came to the Missionpoint Medical Camp in Uganda with a quiet hope, though years of living in darkness had nearly smothered it.
What happened next is nothing short of miraculous.
Dr. Paul Mulyamboga, one of our key medical partners, later shared with us the extraordinary complexity of John Paul’s condition. The operating surgeon described it as a “black cataract”—a particularly dense and degenerated form of cataract that makes surgery both delicate and difficult. During the procedure, the surgeon worked with intense care to remove the cataract and successfully implanted an intraocular lens (IOL). However, due to the case’s complexity, the surgeon recommended a follow-up at Ruharo Eye Centre for further refinement using high-tech imaging equipment.

And then—grace unfolded.
John Paul recently returned for his post-surgical check-up. To everyone’s amazement, his vision had not only improved—it had been restored. A man who had been completely blind can now read. Let that sink in: from total darkness to reading once again.
“It has been an exciting experience,” Dr. Mulyamboga told us. “His vision is remarkably good.”
This is more than a medical success. This is the Gospel in action. This is the Kingdom breaking through.
At Amigos International and through our Missionpoint Medical Camps, we don’t just offer medicine. We offer mirrors of God’s love—tangible expressions of compassion, dignity, and restoration. Whether it's a simple check-up or a complex surgical case, every moment we serve is a moment for healing in body and soul.
John Paul’s story reminds us why we go. Why we give. Why we serve.
He represents thousands more still waiting in darkness—waiting not just for sight, but for someone to see them.
